Phoebe Traquair (1852 – 1936) was a contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an Irish born artist who achieved international recognition for her role in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland, as an illlustrator, painter and embroiderer.  In 1920 she became the first woman elected to the Royal Scottish Academy

Phoebe Traquair painted the famous Willowood piano in 1910, now on display in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

In 1909 Sir Robert Lorimer was commissioned by the industrialist, Frank Tennant to design a bespoke case for his Steinway piano. The casing was undertaken by Scott Morton & Co in Edinburgh but the painting was by Phoebe Traquair

The top of the piano is painted with an elaborate Tree of Life design centred on a sleeping Cupid from which this design is taken

Approx size of each sheet 50 cm x 43 cm
