Old Welsh Blanket, Narrow Loom NL64 is a good example of an old Welsh wool narrow loom blanket in a slightly lighter weight

Woven in a plaid design with a cream ground with a terracotta, sage green and poppy red overcheck

These examples were woven in two strips on a narrow loom and then hand stitched together down the centre

Usually heavier in weight and often woven in soft, earthen colours, characteristic of authentic vegetable dyes, the narrow loom blankets pre date 1910 and the introduction of the wide loom

This is a one off item

These are old textiles and we carefully check the condition of each blanket

The blankets are washed in a natural wool wash and treated with our own anti moth and wool tonic, restored when necessary, and only then offered for sale

The History of old Welsh Blankets

For centuries weaving has carried on in Wales and relied on an economy based on sheep farming

Many of the mills were small, single-family operations which used wool drawn from the immediate locality

The mills operated a sort of barter system with the local sheep farmers, in exchange for fleeces, the mill owners would trade flannel, blankets and knitting yarn

With the industrial revolution certain mills became mechanised in the 19th century, eventually employing up to 100 people, whilst others remained cottage industries. Most were self sufficient in that they carded, dyed, spun, wove and finished all their own products

The Great English Outdoors is committed to promoting the work of the Welsh woollen industry. For over two decades we have sourced and stocked blankets or carthenni and accessories made in the few remaining Welsh woollen mills

These blankets are old textiles and individually sized

They generally fit a small double bed but look great at the end of a larger Queen size or King size bed, on top of a white duvet cover or used as a sofa throw

Approx size 165  cm x  215 cm
