This classically trained Cellist has hit the headlines recently, bravely playing his cello in the war torn streets of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city

Denys Karachevtsev, aged 30, studied at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. He is a former cellist of the Polish-based I, Culture Orchestra

Denys has played for the people of Kharkiv, his repertoire has included the Ukrainian national anthem, Bach’s Cello Suite No 5 and Project Trio

On Facebook Denys wrote “I am a cellist and a citizen of Kharkiv. I love my heroic city which is now struggling to survive the war,” later adding: “I am launching my project in the streets of Kharkiv to raise funds for humanitarian aid and restoration of the city’s architecture. Let’s unite to revive our city together!”

During the day Denys divides his time working as a volunteer, helping inhabitants with evacuation plans and access to huminitarian aid, and practicing his Cello

Since the beginning of the war over 500 civilians have been killed. The city of Kharkiv has suffered constant Russian airstrikes and artillery shelling, with the destruction of homes, official buildings and vital infrastructure. Alongside the food shortages, lack of water and essential medicines, civilians have had to deal with freezing temperatures

It is thought that approximately 500,000 civilians remain in Kharkiv, which had a population of 1.8 million people before the war
