The Blackbird

The Blackbird

blackbird
Blackbird by Matthew Stadlen

Turdus merula

The first soloist of the Dawn Chorus, for such a dull looking bird the Blackbird is blessed with a wonderful melodious song. A member of the Thrush family, the Blackbird is found across the UK in gardens, parks and woodlands. The males are jet black with yellow rimmed eyes and beak, the females are a handsome brown shade. According to Druid legends, the Celtic Queen, Goddess Rhiannon had three sacred Blackbirds. These birds could sing the dead back to life, and those alive to their grave
