Motorways. Superstores. Pylons. The town of Telford.
The great pleasure of these old maps is that all the things
you don’t like aren’t on them.
Dating from 1938-70 , some are cloth-backed –
yet to be bettered in map ergonomics – and namesare calligraphed
in steel gravure type. They were expensive to produce and revise
and these editions, though not quite all the landscape they
so dispassionately recall, have not folded as gracefully as
the maps do.
